Science & Technology Advocacy Renaissance for Africa (STARFA) - Africa Development Council
MISSION STATEMENT
STARFA; established in 2006, registered in 2008; is a Non-Governmental Organization with a mission to revolutionize the application of science and technology (S&T) for national development. We have coordinating offices at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and the University of Ghana, Legon; with Technology Research Teams established in some technology research institutions in Ghana. It is a Ghanaian
based NGO
OBJECTIVES (AIM)
- Act as a bridge between the Universities/Polytechnics and the Industries.
- Act as a mouthpiece for Scientific and Technological Revolution in Africa.
- Project any newly discovered method of approach to solving scientific problems, nationally and internationally vis-Ã -vis mathematical constants, formulae etc
- Play a pivotal role in realizing the goals for the NEPAD initiative.
- Solicit sponsorships for vital S&T Research Projects.
- Award scholarships to needy but brilliant science students in tertiary institutions.
- Link the media with the research findings; in other words, S&T content providers for the media on sustainable basis. Also, S&T Expertise providers to industries.
- Create a platform for the S&T researchers to interact with the public.
- Promote formation of S&T Research teams.
- Impress upon investors to adopt inventions or research findings for industrial input translating into job creation with its concomitant poverty reduction.
Over the years STARFA has presented proposals on technology advocacy and transfer to Government, corporate bodies and media houses. We organize media encounters to bring to the attention of the business community and academia the inventions by the ordinary persons in our local communities. An example is the invention of dry cells to generate electricity from wood ash by a class one pupil teacher in Kuntunse, Accra, which STARFA brought to the public domain through the media in November, 2011 in commemoration of the World Science Day for Peace and Development.
We also organize debates and programmes on indigenous
technology transfer for local content capacity building as far as manufacturing and the oil and gas industries are concerned. This is to ensure that research findings are linked to industry, leading to job creation and poverty
eradication
